[englisch, 'rɪəl taɪm; wörtlich »Echtzeit«], Funktionsweise elektronischer Geräte. Eintreffende Signale (z. B. Steuerspannungen, MIDI-Daten) werden sofort, also annähernd zeitgleich mit dem auslösenden Impuls, verarbeitet. Dieses Verfahren ist z. B. bei der Klanganalyse (Analyzer) und Pegelmessung (Aussteuerungsanzeige) gebräuchlich. Sequenzer und Drum-Computer können in der Real-Time-Betriebsart (Gegensatz: Step by Step ) programmiert werden, d. h. sie speichern alle über eine externe Eingabemöglichkeit (z. B. Keyboard, Pads) zugeführten Daten im Moment des Musizierens (Tonhöhe, Zeitdauer usw.). Nachträgliche Korrekturen oder Ergänzungen sind möglich.
